Most contemporary relief organizations and the Hanafi school of thought recommend using the silver standard. This lower threshold allows more people to contribute, thereby providing more aid to the poor. Silver Nisab is equivalent to 612.36 grams (some cite 595g) of pure silver.
The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) established the Nisab based on gold and silver. Because these metals are no longer used as primary currency, scholars calculate their current monetary equivalent based on daily market spot prices: Gold Nisab is equivalent to 87.48 grams (some cite 85g) of pure gold.
